the schooler beard tackles 5 questions

pagans have the festival of imbolc.  sports fans have march madness.  astronomers have the precise timing of vernal equinox.  well, the classical beaver knows that spring has officially arrived when oregon symphony bass player jason schooler appears clean-shaven in concert.  before it was too late, the beave and the beard traded some emails:

how many years have you appeared in fall only to vanish come spring?

hmm… let’s see.  I first appeared in the fall of ‘06, and then hung around for 2.5 years, then decided to go away the summer of ‘09.  After that I started making my seasonal appearances.

what’s the greatest length you’ve ever achieved?

Not sure.  But I’ve been long enough to completely cover Jason’s bow tie. That’s kinda nice, because then if he decides not to wear a tie for a concert, no one notices.

do you pose any technical challenges during jason’s bass playing?

No, not at all.  If anything, I enhance his playing.  However, once in a while I get caught under his fingers when he’s playing a particularly busy passage on the E string.

which composer had the most awesome facial hair?

Brahms definitely comes to mind.  Rimsky-Korsakov as well.

any idea when you will be bidding us adieu this year?

I plan to make my seasonal hiatus when the weather starts warming up.  I’ll be back when it gets chilly again.

well, there you have it – another exclusive interview from the classical beaver investigative journalism bureau.  told ya’ it would be unbelievable.
