exit through the gift shop – part II

gentle reader, i’d forgive you for thinking fantasía para un gentilhombre was the name of some new tapas bar / strip club opening up on northeast alberta.  the title, however, is attached to joaquin rodrigo’s spanish guitar masterpiece, and sharon isbin was in town to give it the what for.  she may not have had a *whammy bar on her axe, but when this guitar goddess strode onto the schnitzer stage last night, she nevertheless looked perfectly poised to rock.  the shimmery red top, the smokin’ hot leather pants, the big hair, the amp (gasp!)… this was decidedly not your father’s classical music concert.  after resting her left heel on a fancy foot stand and carefully placing a no-skid guitar grip across her lap, ms. isbin tore into 21 minutes of some serious six-string magic with unfailing exactitude and virtuosic precision.  [the close of the slow movement was a definite hair-raiser.]  after the fantasia came to an end, ms. isbin treated the crowd to an encore medley: one tune from her 2010 grammy-winning album journey to the new world (featuring a collaboration with renowned fiddler mark o’connor and folk-legend joan baez) and another song from her most-recent record entitled sharon isbin & friends: guitar passions (featuring collaborations with steve vai, stanley jordan, and nancy wilson from heart).  and just fyi, both are currently available for purchase at http://www.amazon.com!
