saturday, sunday, and monday night the oregon symphony kicks things off with an overture by joe haydn (yay!) and follows it up with a piano concerto by herr mozart (garrick ohlsson’s at the steinway, yo). the show is topped off with the amazingly terrifying *fifth symphony penned by dmitri shostakovich.
why go? well, long-time beaver readers already know where this rodent stands: anything by haydn automatically gets two non-opposable claws up. i seriously can’t think of a more sublime way to warm up the crowd for mozart than with one of papa’s overtures. and jeez-oh-man, to have mr. garrick ohlsson in p-town for wolfie’s concerto #9 ~ wowee. back in 1970, this guy became the very first american to win the international frédéric chopin piano competition (um, one doesn’t even have to be a classical music fan to figure out that’s quite a big deal!) simply put, here’s a chance to witness a living legend. and if you go monday night, it will be the vigil of garrick’s 64th birthday… perhaps a certain lennon/mccartney song is on tap for an encore? who knows, anything can happen.
call (503) 228-1353 to grab your tickets… only 10 smackers if you’ve got a student id. see you there!
