boy-oh-boy, shostakovich just can’t catch a break this season. first josh bell decides to scrap uncle dmitri’s violin concerto back in january, and now the rarely performed symphony #10 originally on the band’s program two weeks from now has been switched to his way more famous #5. the beavs realizes this means absolutely nothing to approximately 99.3% of americans, but to all you p-town shostakovich aficionados out there, i offer you my sincere condolences. the good news for me? shosty’s fifth is the only one of his symphonies i know… and it’s a total winner… and i can’t wait to finally hear it live!
oh, if you’re a shostakovich devotee still wondering why (for the love of god) this had to happen, i might guess that coach k. maybe wanted to hold off on performing #10 until he and the oregon symphony could record it for posterity. but that’s just a guess… what do i know? i’m just a rodent.
