what i learned over summer vacation (2011 edition)

#10 ~ i learned once a person starts putting amaretto in their morning coffee, it can be a very difficult habit to break.

#9 ~ i learned trombonists like to spend their summers climbing mountains.

#8 ~ i learned if alice waters instructs you to roast salvaged apricot pits in order to crack them open in order to get at the kernel inside in order to bake bitter almond cookies in order to crush them in order to make an absorbent base for your fruit galette, it’s best to just shut up and do it.

#7 ~ i learned that mosquitoes are (still) grade-a motherfuckers that stand alone as the only life-form me and my hubbie take pleasure in killing.

#6 ~ i learned that purchasing an indians baseball cap as a symbol of long-distance solidarity does not guarantee the tribe will even make the playoffs.

#5 ~ i learned being able to walk through a cemetery during the intermission of a mahler concert is sublimely ideal.  [thanks, obf!]

#4 ~ i learned strolling along the goose-infested shores of the mighty willamette with a chesapeake bay retriever is a bit too stimulating for the dog.

#3 ~ i learned scholars believe benjamin britten and peter pears had hot gay sex for the very first time in grand rapids, michigan (of all places!)

#2 ~ i learned montana’s flathead lake can be so calm and still on summer evenings that one can see the milky way’s reflection in its waters.

#1 ~ i learned that the closest thing these days to christmas morning is receiving my oregon symphony season subscription packet in the mail on some random tuesday in august.
