hey mr. tambourine men – part II

after intermission, the final piece of the season awaited the band: the concerto for orchestra composed by the pride of nagyszentmiklós: béla bartók.  the beav kinda wonders if coach kalmar chose this piece specifically as a gift for his orchestra, ‘cuz it seems like music that classical musicians would love to play – technically challenging with plenty of opportunities for everyone on stage to have fun and shine.  for me as a listener, the piece is – oh, how shall i put this – well, the piece is a bit challenging.  even with the help of *the pitman tutorial, mr. bartók’s music remains unmelodically slippery and abrupt to my newbie ears, repeatedly denying my heart of any solid footholds.  after the concert, many musicians commented on several significant bloopers that occurred during the performance – all of ‘em undetected by me (and i daresay most of the audience).  it’s that kind of music… you know: challenging.  i can also see why it’s a completely perfect choice to bid farewell to the season ~ perhaps the quality i love most about maestro carlos is his willingness to challenge both audience and band, to make us think, to ask questions that will always remain unanswered.  afterall, he’s ultimately why the band got to carnegie, presenting a brilliant program that was one of many, many brilliant programs this year.  i don’t know about you, but this is one rodent who will never fatigue listening to brilliance, even if it’s a tad challenging at times.  dear carlos: a big phat danke schön from the classical beaver for yet one more outrageously delicious season!
