the classical beaver is a fan of classical radio (shocker, i know).  luckily, portland’s own 89.9 is always there to give the beave its fix when the oregon symphony isn’t playing.  it’s spring pledge drive, and since top 10 lists are clinically proven to dramatically increase motivation, here’s almost a dozen reasons to donate to all classical fm:

#10 – ed goldberg has the most brilliant plug for donating a car to the station.

#9 – i’m still thinking about rossini’s william tell dance music from over a month ago and mahler’s scherzo from saturday night.  this is music that sticks to the ribs of your brain.

#8 – you get to eavesdrop on christa wessel laugh about her latest roadtrip across eastern oregon.

#7 – no horrible commercials.  nope, not one.  ever.

#6 – you’ll occasionally catch robert mcbride announcing the phrase: “winner of the coveted golden spurtle award.”

#5 – if you listen religiously to millennium of music on sunday mornings like i do, it’s not a donation to the station – it’s a tithe.

#4 – lots of shows claim to play music you won’t hear anywhere else, but club mod actually delivers on that promise.  i’m pretty sure my soul was saved after listening to 75 minutes of tom waits crooning jesus’ blood never failed me yet – over and over and over (and over)…

#3 – john burk.  period.

#2 – the studio shelves at all classical hold approximately 3.7 billion albums, and music director john pitman isn’t afraid to play any of them.

#1 – all classical fm is quite simply the most kick-ass classical radio station on the planet.  seriously.  and they’re right here in pdx – a jewel in the crown of stumpland (i’m pretty sure they’re the sapphire-looking one, right next to the microbrew ruby and farmers market emerald).  if you haven’t given them a listen, do yourself a favor and tune in now.  if you’re already a fan, for the love of god, give ‘em some moolah!  fork it over!  pony up!  call or click today!

I loved Gavin Bryars’ Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet! The added vocals from Tom Waits on the latest incarnation of this piece are perfect.
