the envelope, please

well faithful readers, we’ve just about made it to the new year, so you know what that means: the 2010 golden tail awards!  every december, we here at the classical beaver home office gather ‘round the yule log (all-mclaughlin-group-style) and hash out the best of the best, the cream of the crop, the top of the heap of this past year’s oregon symphony classical concerts.  after much civilized debate and uncivilized fisticuffs, here are our picks for most spine-tingling moments of twenty-ten:

fourth runner-up: february 8th – pietari inkinen leading the band in the second symphony of finnish phenom jean sibelius

third runner-up: november 22nd – stephen hough blowing up the grand piano and bringing franz liszt back to life

second runner-up: may 24th – maestro carlos brilliantly conducting mahler’s titanic symphony #1

first runner-up: october 4th – hilary hahn ravishing her instrument throughout tchaikovsky’s violin concerto

and the winner of the 2010 golden tail award goes to… (gulp)…

marathon pianist arnaldo cohen and the oregon symphony under the baton of coach kalmar, who on the 16th of may 2010 (spontaneously?!) encored the slow movement of Beethoven’s fourth piano concerto to a breathlessly packed schnitz.

oh dear, please tell me you witnessed at least one of these miracles!  i’d love to collect your two cents as well… see that little talk bubble above this post with the words Leave a Comment? – well, do as your told.  the classical beaver offers its sincerest wish for lots of peace, wood, and music throughout 2011.  see you next year!

    Cohen #1???

I dunno beaver – No doubt Arnoldo was a machine but Hahn was so good on Saturday I *had* to make it back to the Schnitz Sunday & Monday.

The Monday night Mahler no.1 was magical. The energy in the audience at the end was crazy insane… like being in the Rose Garden for a Blazers come from behind playoff win (+Free Chalupa!). I was giving high-fives to everyone in lower mezz… one those rare shared “proud Portlander” moments for sure.

Sadly I missed Hough :\… the Sibelius no.2 was good but dunno if I’d put it in my top 5.

What about Prangcharoen’s PHENOMENON? I think I overheard a “f*ck yeah” come from the Dress Circle during the standing ovation.
