well, turn it up man!

everybody knows there are certain songs that just beg you to turn up the bass.  perhaps it’s a stevie wonder tune, or an epic kanye number, or bohemian rhapsody.  for me growing up, it was always say goodbye to hollywood by billy joel.  [dear god, did i actually admit that out loud?]  anywho, according to (what else?) wikipedia, something called a theorbo was invented in the late 1500’s essentially to crank up the bass.  and are you ready for this shit?  someone’s actually going to play one during the oregon symphony’s performance of handel’s messiah next weekend.  i mean, look at that thing!  seriously, some of these bitches have strings over 3 feet long.  whew.  and not only will the theorbo be in attendance, the orchestra is going to share the packed stage with a harpsichord, old-school timpani drums, a portable organ [i’ll show you a portable organ…], not one, not two, not three, but four solo vocalists flying in from all over the planet just to sing at the schnitz, and a 48-person choir.  for peet’s sake, forget what you think you know about handel’s messiah and come here it live.  (pssst -confidential from the beaver – the symphony ticket office says seats are already getting scarce)

hey man, is that freedom rock?

um… no, it’s george frideric handel.

well, turn it up man!
