the first annual international stephen hough appreciation week: day 7!

to celebrate mr. hough’s arrival to pdx, we here at the cb home office are celebrating day #7 of the first annual international stephen hough appreciation week (but don’t worry, it’s really an octave, so we got one more day).  once again, we don our “wwshd?” plastic bracelets, and with a solemn flick of my bic, we light the purple candle which honors the man as theologian (it is sunday, after all).  musician, blogger, macarthur fellow, poet, activist, composer… that’s right, mr. hough is also a theologian.  in 2007 he published a book entitled the bible as prayer that focuses on scripture as spiritual devotion.  stated in the intro, his aim was “…to take all the cherries out of the cake, to present the diamonds already mined, in a neat pile, so that one’s own devotional jewellery could be created without having to chip away at the rock.”  after the intro i had to stop reading, cuz swell writing like that will just make me want to be a practicing catholic again.  oh, and please don’t send me comments about my apparent misspelling in that quote (yah, i’m lookin’ at you charles).  stephen is british… they spell and drive weirdly over there, so cut him some slack.
