come out, come out wherever you are

it’s finally here: national coming out day!  the lavender scented candles are lit, the chevre soufflé is baking in the oven, and i’ve pressed pause on my funny girl (director’s cut) dvd to wish you and your kin a most blessed holiday…

oh, who am i kidding – i suspect more people celebrate arbor day and, with the exception of ellen degeneres, only disgraced televangelists and republican politicians seem to have genuine national coming out days.  i find myself still thinking about tyler clementi, the rutgers student who jumped off the george washington bridge after being dragged out of the closet by his roommate.  i find myself shaking my head when i think about don’t ask don’t tell still being the law of the land.  i find myself generally sad, angry, and helpless this particular national coming out day.

so what’s a queer to do?  well, this particular queer is going to the symphony tonight, and in his heart, he’s going to personally dedicate this evening’s mozart piano concerto to tyler clementi.  there’s just something so perfect and sparkling about wolfgang’s music, at the very least it will serve as a temporary distraction from our world that is so much less than perfect.  who knows… maybe it will even help us all arrive a little bit closer to our own capacity for sparkling perfection.
