litany for arnaldo

for giving our band a reason to play the super symphonic leonore overture #3, thank you brother cohen.

for the simple beauty of the adagio in #2, thank you brother cohen.

for that subtly reserved piano support throughout the triple concerto, letting concertmaster iwasaki sing, sing, sing, thank you brother cohen.

for allowing several stripped-down incarnations of the oregon symphony to shine, thank you brother cohen.

for making the brilliant, sparkling turquoise, cello-goddess quirine viersen stick around pdx for one more week, thank you brother cohen.

for cleanly and clearly illustrating papa haydn’s influence on LvB in opus 15, thank you brother cohen.

for all the chills, spills, and trills of the cross-handed #4 (wow), thank you brother cohen.

for agreeing to repeat the slow movement as an encore sunday night (holy fucking shit, it was 1807 all over again!), thank you brother cohen.

for letting the band warm up with the surprisingly contemporary leonore #2 monday night, thank you brother cohen.

for reminding us of your humanity and for rewarding the mindful listener (hey, 5 almost-perfect notes out of 3,408,752 perfect ones ain’t too shabby), thank you brother cohen.

for staying beautifully on target throughout #5’s insane adagio, even though some moron in the balcony decided it would be the perfect time to unwrap a present (wtf!?), thank you brother cohen.

for all those heart-stopping, mind-blowing, cadenzas (i.e. crazy-stoopid solo piano riffs), thank you brother cohen.

for taking us south of the equator with that incredibly jazzy scott-joplin-meets-keith-jarrett samba encore last night, thank you brother cohen.

for coming to stumptown and channeling the spirit of Beethoven like it will never be tapped again, thank you brother cohen.
