an open letter to david stabler

“Unfortunately, I happened to have read David Stabler’s ‘article’ in the Sunday Oregonian [“Are You Likely To Go To An Oregon Symphony Concert?”]. I will assume his intention was to be funny and light-hearted; however, the sophomoric quiz Mr. Stabler presents manages to offend both regular concertgoers and those who have yet to check out the symphony. The simplistic overstatements implied in the piece do nothing but fuel worn out stereotypes – I am a season subscriber to the Oregon Symphony and I happen to think Lady Gaga is a genuine talent. In a city like Portland, I am thankfully not alone. Printing this editorial fluff is an insult to our orchestra when there is so much brilliant content to discuss. Are you likely to go to an Oregon Symphony concert? If you love music, then clearly the answer is yes.”

The problem is in reading the Oregonian at any time for any reason…what were you thinking?
